Die offizielle Definition von Gesundheit gemäß der Verfassung der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) vom 22. Juli 1946 lautet: „Gesundheit ist ein Zustand vollkommenen körperlichen, geistigen und sozialen Wohlbefindens und nicht die bloße Abwesenheit von Krankheit oder Gebrechen.“ („Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.“)
Gesundheit könnte man als den störungsfreien Lebensfluss in allen Zellen und Organen definieren, als ein Energiepotential ohne besondere Krankheiten, in geistiger und körperlicher Harmonie, in optimal funktionierender Reaktion und Gegenreaktion mit der Umwelt, als ein immer sich änderndes, vielfältiges Lebensgefühl mit Empfindungen der Frische, der Ausdauer, des Wohlbehagens, der Kraft und Leistungsfähigkeit, mit optimistischem Rüstungsvertrauen, geistiger Kraft und starkem Seelenleben.
Gesundheit ist nichts Starres, sondern voll Dynamik und will täglich erworben, erhalten und gesteigert sein, über Jahre und Jahrzehnte hinaus, bis ins höchste Alter. Gesundheit ist nicht Durchschnitt, sondern gesteigerte Norm und individuelle mögliche Vollleistung, dem Lebensalter entsprechend. Sie ist sichtbar gewordener Wille, ist Willensstärke als Dauerhaftigkeit.
Der Wert von Gesundheit
Gesundheit ist ein wichtiger persönlicher und gesellschaftlicher Wert. Ihre Bedeutung wird oft erst bei Krankheit oder mit zunehmendem Alter erkannt. Welche Einschränkungen mit dem Verlust von Gesundheit verbunden sind, wird oft erst dem alternden Menschen bewusst - durch eigene durchgestandene Krankheiten, gesundheitliche Probleme im Umfeld und das sich nähernde Lebensende. Vorsorgeprogramme für jüngere Altersgruppen werden propagiert, laufen aber oft ins Leere.
Im Allgemeinen sind Frauen gesundheitsbewusster als Männer. Dies kann man beispielsweise an der Beteiligung zur Darmkrebsvorsorge erkennen (Männer ca. 10 - 15 %, Frauen ca. 30 % Beteiligung). Kostenlose Krebsvorsorgeuntersuchung (SGB V §25) bekommen Frauen schon jährlich im Alter ab 20 Jahren und Männer erst im Alter ab 45 Jahren, dies könnte auch ein Grund sein warum weniger Männer zur Krebsvorsorgeuntersuchung gehen.
Privilegierte Schichten sind gesünder als unterprivilegierte. Der Abstand ist in den letzten zwanzig Jahren kontinuierlich gewachsen.
Die Förderung und Erhaltung der Gesundheit erfordert geringe finanzielle Mittel. Teuer ist dagegen der Versuch, Gesundheit wiederherzustellen, die sog. kurative Medizin. Das Gesundheitssystem ist neben der Renten-, Arbeits-, Unfall- und Pflegeversicherung eine der fünf Säulen des Sozialsystems.
Aktuell ist die Gründung einer Gesundheitsgewerkschaft im Gespräch.

The value of health
Health is an important personal and social value. Their meaning is often only recognized with illness or with increasing age.
